For a cheap camera, this is pretty decent given the features it has. Color CMOS chip means you won't be getting the best picture in the world, but if you set this up correctly, it will be more than enough. IR lights have maybe a 5ft distance to them, so this will only work for subjects that are close to the camera. At night, the image appears to be black and white with that "nightvision-green" tint to it. Image can be grainy due to the cheap imager, especially at night.
IR lights are of a high enough wavelength that they are invisible to the human eye, so you won't get that weird red glow. However, they are easily visible to other cameras, especially cell phone cameras.
For installation, if you use this camera to its abilities, you can get amazing results. Place the camera as close to the subject or area you are wanting to monitor. This gives the IR lights a chance to do their job, and the ability to capture a face or other identifying detail that you can hand off to the authorities. If you keep the camera too far away, you can see general motion during the lit hours, but you won't be getting any detail needed to make an identification, especially not at night.
I would change out its lens for a 3.6mm (instead of the 6mm it ships with) giving you a wide-angle lens. This means that you will be able to see more of a subject when they are quite close to the camera. The sweet spot with this lens is about 2ft away, where the IR lights will illuminate the subject amazingly well and it won't be too "zoomed in" to cut off important parts of the image. Play with your system. What you see is what you will get.
(Search for a 3.6mm Lens for Board Cameras)
The camera can be powered from your computer if you use one of the 12V lines off of a molex connector. At 200ma, the camera won't affect your computer (and if your computer is your DVR, it reduces the risk of ground loop noise in both video and audio)
My camera did not come with the little "hood" that is pictured here.
(NOTE: I did not test the audio functions of the camera since my system cannot record audio.)
