My main objective for an external soundcard was to find something cheap that would have better sound quality than my crappy onboard realtek, which suffers from horrible interferance. This device worked as advertised, and it is cheap. It shows up under windows XP with no problem and no added driver, and the sound is nice and clean.
Also, the line-in is nice and clear and my friends can now understand what I'm saying without the 75Hz buzz from my graphics card.
Maybe this is mean, but I took off one star because I haven't been able to get it to work under linux. It seems to me that if the device is properly designed to the USB sound spec, then it would (as several other USB devices have, on the same comp). It shows up as an Alsa device, but has garbled sound. I've been told I can try overriding the playback frequency, but haven't done this yet.
I also tested it on an old comp (which might not even meet the specs for WinXP) with USB 1.1 and it actually works, though it pops occasionally. I don't recommend it for old comps.
I also have not tried the optical output.
